Hiring Requirements

Getting a job is pretty difficult in this day and age no matter how crappy a job you think it is. But no matter what job it is, there are certain requirements that need to be met. Don’t you wonder at times how some people are actually able to get hired despite their inability function as a normal human being. I am sure some people are unhappy when they apply for a job and when they return to do a follow up,  someone else, who is less qualified is hired.

I currently work at a cafe and a new employee was hired. Being in Canada and having to work in the service line, you would think that the basic requirements would be that the person is able to speak and understand English but apparently I am wrong. When you apply for a job, you should hope that the person hiring you is from the same background as you.

This new guy does not have a good understanding of the English language and is beyond retarded. He is unable to do anything he is supposed to do and throws temper tantrums when he is unable to complete his task. To make matters worse, he has an attitude problem. It is one thing to hire someone who is slow but hard working and another to hire some who is incompetent. It is like teaching a legless frog to jump. It ain’t gonna jump no matter how you teach him. By that I even mean it as a complement cos the frog looks better.

We all go through a training period whereby we learn the list of things that are needed to be done and do them. The same thing as when you get a new dog. You teach the basics like sit, heel and stay. At a cafe of course the most important thing is to make drinks and brew coffee, stock up the fridge and take out the garbage. But no, this guy just stands there looking stupid then looks at the work schedule for 15 minutes and then walks around when there is no coffee left in the machine. You would think that after training he would know the bare minimum of things to do.

When asked to make a Maple Red Latte, he asks if the customer wants a shot of maple syrup and then doesn’t know what to do next cos he doesn’t know a red latte is made with rooibos. When asked to get an Apricot cookie(low-fat), he storms around not knowing what to do and then passing the task on to someone else and then says that it isn’t an apricot cookie, he calls it a low-fat. And this is because on the label, it reads: Low-fat Apricot Cookie. When working behind preparing for catering, he tells his co-worker to do the orders and he will watch to learn; he doesn’t even do anything. A customer orders a tiramisu and he asks the customer to point out to him what they wanted. He walks around to the front to try to memorise all the labels but is unable to collect the dirty dishes. Mind you, when the rest of us were trained, the manager  is always making sure we clear the dishes, brew the coffee and do whatever is necessary.  The basics were pretty much drilled into us.

Now how can a person like him get hired? Firstly, it is because he and the manager are from the same background. So you can say that is empathy. In my eyes, it is just pity. The expectations are so different and biased. Anyone and  everyone who has encountered him have said that he was sure to be fired but i assure you that that will not happen for a long time.

Now don’t you think there is a problem with the management? There has to be at least some basic set of qualifications and requirements that need to be made so that customer service would be better at any place. A list that needs to be checked against before hiring anyone. Not just based on how the manager feels cos no one wants to work with someone who does not pull half the weight. And honestly, call himself a man? he might as well just cut it off cos he doesn’t need it.
